Black Clouds Indeed…

Well I just got sad news in my email, and most of you probably don’t care, but I am going to vent anyway:

This may not matter to most of you, but to me it is a sad thing.  I love music and for the past 20 years part of that love has been Dream Theater.  Ya’ll may not be familiar with them, but I am.  To me they are the embodiment of what Maetros of Rock should be, highly talented, extremely versatile, and lovers of music.

The band will go on and I will continue to follow them as I have through all the ups and downs since I became a fan, but now that Portnoy is leaving it will change the nature of the band.  Personnel changes always do, but as one of the founding members of the group and probably the most public face of the band it will be strange to hear DT without him.  I wish him luck on his future endeavors.

It seemed like something was changing in the band in the lead up to their last album.  To the public they insisted that nothing was wrong, but the music, lyrics, and the title (Black Clouds and Silver Linings) seemed to have a sadness and finality to them that was different from their other albums.  I guess now we know why.

Just want to leave with one of my favorite DT songs, one that speaks to me.  I think the sentiment about being your own man and not being tied to other’s perceptions are a good way to send off Mike as he chooses to be his own man and walk away from DT:
